Forest Clearances granted between January – March, 2014

Forest Clearance number has increased from 72 in the last quarter to 117 this quarter.

Largest chunk of forestland compared to last quarter (In the last quarter forestland diversion was 622.3 ha) has been diverted for irrigation projects this quarter. Three irrigation projects - Lower Penganga Irrigation Project in Madhya Pradesh, Pindkepar Irrigation Tank project and Semri Dam Project in Maharashtra were cleared this quarter. Three coal mining projects - Ashoka Phase-II Coal Mine in Jharkhand, Talaipalli Coal Mine and D B Power Coal Mine in Raigarh district Chhattisgarh were cleared this quarter. 25 road, 13 transmission line, 2 other minerals, 1 iron ore mining, railway and   drinking water project and 63 ‘other projects’ like access road, retail outlet etc. were cleared this quarter.

Two districts are losing their entire forest cover this quarter – with these diversions

Jagatsinghpur district in Orissa and Hisar district in Haryana are losing their entire forest cover this quarter with the proposed diversions. Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh, Yavtmal district in Maharashtra and Amristar district in Punjab are losing about half their forest cover with these forestland diversions.
